Green de Mint

Green de Mint, originally uploaded by onedamnthing.

Shamrock Shaketini night was postponed due to plague and now I am stuck with a full fifth of Creme de Menthe.

I had asked the jovial, mid-fifties liquor store clerk with the bleached blond spikey hair and single, dangling crucifix earring if he carried a smaller size. He smiled a yellowing smile and offered up this story as an apology.

I knew this old Hunky Gerry – and I can say ‘Hunky’ cuz my family is Hungarian. Gerry had this real thick accent and be was always saying stuff wrong. Like that bottle you got there, Gerry would call it “green de mint.”

One time me and Gerry was admiring my friend Mikey’s new car. Gerry sez — you know, with his accent — “Heya, Mikey! That’s a real nice farking car you got. Whaddaya call dat farking car?”

Mikey sez, “It’s a Chevy Lumina, Ger.”

And Gerry sez — I’ll never forget this — “A Lumina? They no make no cars outta farking ALUMINA!!”

Great story, but I’m still not sure it’s worth a $24 bottle of liquor I will never, in life, finish.

(And I never knew that the Hungarian accent sounded so similar to the stereotyped Italian accent in Johnny Dangerously.)
