…aaaaand the Apple Turnovers
These didn’t turn out so pretty, because once I thought “apple turnovers” it quickly became “APPLE! TURNOVERS! NOW!” They sure are tasty, though.
This was my basic recipe:
- Leftover puff pastry from this recipe
- One apple peeled and diced
- About 2 TBSP prepared applesauce
- About 1 TBSP each brown sugar and cinnamon
Lay the pastry out in a square. Paint each edge with an egg wash. Spoon as much mixture as humanly possibly into the center of the pastry. Fold diagonally into a triangle shape. Crimp edge unattractively with fingers, and then try unsuccessfully to fix the splitting seams by pressing down with a fork. Brush tops with egg wash. Bake in a pre-heated oven on a (very important) non-stick baking sheet at 425 degrees for 20 minutes. Reduce heat to 400 degrees and cook for 5 minutes more. Let cool completely, lest you burn your tongue on the molten filling.
Things I might try the next time around:
- Roll the pastry out a little thinner and make 4 smaller turnovers
- Cut the pastry in symmetrical squares, so they fold over into nicer looking triangles
- Use a tarter apple (all I had in the house was Gala)
- Use a milk/sugar wash instead of an egg wash on the inside and outside of the pastry
All in all, a great impromptu dessert.
